What is median scoring?

Median scoring (sometimes called a "median game" or "playing the median") gives every team a second matchup each week, against the entire league. Each week you line up all teams' scores and split the league in half:

• Teams in the top half of scores get an extra win.
• Teams in the bottom half get an extra loss.

So in a 12-team league, you effectively play two games every week: your head-to-head opponent and the field. A typical week can go 2-0, 1-1, or 0-2.

Why serious leagues add it

• It rewards actually scoring well. The classic gut-punch, second-highest score of the week but you lose because your opponent went nuclear, stops deciding your season.
• It cuts the luck. Schedule luck (who you happened to draw) matters far less when half your record comes from the whole field.
• It keeps more teams alive longer, which keeps managers engaged deeper into the season.

How to calculate the median win

1. Take every team's total for the week and sort them.
2. With an even number of teams, the median sits between the two middle scores, everyone above it wins the median game, everyone below loses it.
3. With an odd number of teams, most leagues drop the exact-median team into the "win" half or use the middle score as the cut line; define this in your bylaws so there's no argument.

The catch: ESPN and Sleeper make it painful

Neither platform shows a live median during games. You're stuck doing mental math on Sunday afternoon, "if the Vipers are at 96 and there are five teams under them, am I in the top half or not?", and recalculating every time a score moves.
